Year 8 Transition
Starting Your Journey at Howick College
The move from intermediate to high school is an exciting milestone, and we're here to make that transition as smooth and welcoming as possible. From the second half of the year, we offer a range of opportunities for Year 8 students and their families to connect with Howick College before their first day.
Our Open Evening is the perfect starting point for prospective families - both in-zone and out-of-zone. Come along to meet our senior leaders, explore the school, and discover everything Howick College has to offer. It's a great chance to ask questions and get a real feel for our school community.
Our Senior Leadership Team and two current Year 9 students from our feeder schools - Somerville Intermediate, Howick Intermediate, Maraetai Beach School, and Beachlands School - visit each school to introduce themselves and begin building connections with Year 8 students.
This is a valuable opportunity for students to hear first-hand about the Year 9 experience and ask any questions they may have in a familiar environment.In December, all Year 8 students are invited to spend a day at Howick College as part of our Transition Day programme.

Travel practice: Bus services run from Beachlands and Maraetai, giving students the chance to experience their commute before school begins.

House orientation: You'll join your House group for activities and orientation, meeting teachers, senior school leaders, and fellow students.

New friendships: A relaxed, fun day designed to help you feel confident and connected before Day One.

Your first day at Howick College is reserved for Year 9 students and any new Year 10-13 students. This intentional, quieter start gives new students the space to settle in, find their feet, and get comfortable - before the full school community arrives.
Howick College, in partnership with Howick Rotary, offers academic scholarships to eligible in-zone Year 8 students enrolling at Howick College. Scholarship details and applications will be made available on our website when the application period opens. Families will be notified when applications open - another reason to ensure your enrolment application is fully completed.
