Language Support

The Language Support Department offers programmes to meet the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs). Our main aim is to help students develop English language skills across four modalities: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Senior school programmes focus on developing literacy for tertiary studies, including NCEA courses at Levels One and Two.

Language Support Details

  • Designed for migrant students who would not cope with mainstream English course demands. The emphasis is on developing academic English skills in speaking, reading, and writing for secondary and tertiary study and community contexts.

NCEA Levels 1 and 2 are offered to senior students.

  • For all students (Years 9–13) needing further English language learning support. This course is taken in addition to an ENL class.

The emphasis is on developing accuracy and confidence in all English modes. Senior students are offered EL Unit Standards at Levels 1, 2, and 3, with opportunities to seek support and clarification in other curriculum areas.

  • For senior students in Years 12 and 13 who have not gained literacy Level 1 and/or NCEA Level 2. Taken in addition to an ENS class, the emphasis is on gaining literacy Level 1 and NCEA Level 2 in Year 12, and up to 60 credits of English Language Level 3 across Years 12 and 13. Students in this pathway are not working toward University Entrance.

  • For ELLs who have just arrived in the country. Language support involves assistance with English in social, family, and academic contexts.

Students are taught Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and English with strong emphasis on subject terminology and text types.

Reception students progress to mainstream and higher classes as they become more confident English users and gain familiarity with their school environment.

  • A facility encouraging independent learning through information technology, including:

    • Language learning resources available on the internet

    • Interactive CD-ROMs

    • Teacher-directed units of work in an IT environment

This supports the school-wide initiative to encourage self-directed learning and help students reach their potential.
