Steve Gurney attended Howick College from 1977 to 1981 as a member of Bell House, where he earned honours for excellence in classwork during his junior years and high achievement recognition in 1979 and 1980. By 1981, he had earned senior honours for his contribution to the Tramping Club — an early sign of the outdoor adventurer he was destined to become.
While sport may not have defined his school years, the determination, courage and relentless drive that would later set him apart were already taking shape. It was at university, through the discovery of kayaking, that those qualities found their outlet — and from there, his journey became nothing short of extraordinary.
Through grit, resilience and an adventurous spirit, Steve rose to become one of New Zealand's most accomplished multisport athletes, his name becoming synonymous with the legendary Coast to Coast race, which he won an astonishing nine times. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to sport and the wider community, Steve was awarded a New Zealand Order of Merit.
But Steve's story extends well beyond the finish line. He is an inventor, author and motivational speaker who has consistently turned setbacks — including serious injuries — into opportunities for growth and inspiration. He has written two bestselling books, Lucky Legs and Eating Dirt, competed on Dancing with the Stars, and designed innovative gear to help athletes push their limits. He has also used his platform to champion causes close to his heart, including CureKids and the Mental Health Foundation.
Steve's is a story of endurance, reinvention and contribution — a powerful example of what becomes possible when passion meets perseverance.
From Bell House student to New Zealand sporting legend - we couldn't be prouder! Congratulations Steve, and thank you for inspiring our current students with your incredible story.
