Student Experience

Every year the Howick College welcomes students from over 17 different countries. We will meet you at the airport, introduce you to your homestay family and pair you with a local student, who will help you integrate into life at school.

 

Our dedicated International team are here to help you. You can talk to us about academic assistance, personal concerns, or get help to plan a trip so you can experience more of our beautiful country.

 

We encourage you to become involved in many of the opportunities we offer including the International Food Festival, School Ball, School Production, a variety of sports teams, community service and environmental projects.

Location

Howick College is located in the eastern suburbs, approximately 30 minutes from the central city by car or ferry. Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most diverse city, where everyone has easy access to our beautiful beaches, parks and hiking trails.

 

Howick offers a safe, relaxed lifestyle for families, with many beaches, sporting and cultural clubs, local shops, cinemas, shopping malls and parks close by.

Outdoor Education (OED)

When choosing Howick College, we aim to give you an incredible experience along-side excellent academic opportunities. For many of our students, our highly regarded Outdoor Education programme delivers this and more!

 

Outdoor Education encompasses a variety of skills and activities including kayaking, sailing, camps, rock-climbing, first aid, high ropes and tramping. You will develop confidence, leadership, creativity, and team-building skills, all while exploring our gorgeous country.

Trips and Events

To help you make the most of your experience in New Zealand, we organise day and overnight trips throughout the year. Whether you are here for a short experience or finishing your education with us, you will have opportunities to explore some of the great locations and activities that make New Zealand special.

 

Day Trips

Throughout the year, the International Department and Student Council, organise trips to help you take advantage of the places and activities on offer in our wonderful city! Some recent trips have been to the Auckland Zoo, Hobbiton, paintball and beach picnics.

 

Fun-filled after-school activities including movies and popcorn, international dinners and homestay family evenings, help many students establish life-long friendships.

Explore some of New Zealand’s best kept secrets on this 3-day trip in Term 3, for our OED International students. Included is the world-renowned Tongariro Crossing hike, mountain biking and thermal hot pools.

 

South Island or North Island Beach Tour

As part of our End of Year Programme for students not sitting New Zealand exams, students have the option of joining one of two  10-day trips available:

  • The South Island tour explores some of New Zealand’s most popular destinations and attractions, including Queenstown, Christchurch, Wanaka and the Milford Sound. Activities offered include jet boating, swimming with dolphins, whale watching, canyon swing and kayaking, to name a few.

  • The North Island Beach tour comprises all of what makes New Zealand summer spectacular. If you like the sun, sand, surf and hanging with your friends, this is the trip for you!

Also part of our End of Year Programme for students not sitting New Zealand exams, is the opportunity to join our Year 9 Camp as a Senior Leader and experience the best of New Zealand as a ‘kiwi kid’. Activities include camping in a tent overnight, learning archery skills, watersliding, sailing and cooking dinner over an open fire.
