International Student Information

Your Education

At Howick College, you will work towards NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) Levels 1–3 — a world-recognised New Zealand qualification accepted in countries including the United States, Australia, England, India, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand, Spain, and most EU nations. We can also assist with convalidation for students from South America.

We offer over 50 subjects across a wide range of interests and pathways. Your International Dean will work with you personally to plan your subject choices and ensure you are on track to meet your goals. Our dedicated ESOL and Language Support team will also assess and support your English language development throughout your time with us.

More Information about Studying at Howick College

  • New Zealand high school runs from Year 9 (age 13–14) through to Year 13 (age 17–18). Years 9 and 10 offer a broad curriculum to help you discover your strengths and interests, while Years 11–13 focus on NCEA Levels 1–3. The flexibility of NCEA means we can build a timetable tailored to your individual needs and goals. For more information, visit our NCEA page or view the Subject Pathway Map.

  • We understand that studying in another language can be challenging. Our peer mentoring programme pairs you with a senior international student who has been at Howick College for at least two years. They will meet with you regularly and help you navigate any difficulties you encounter — academic or otherwise.

  • Getting involved outside the classroom is one of the best ways to build friendships, develop resilience, and make lasting memories. Howick College offers an extensive range of sports teams and co-curricular activities to suit all interests. Visit our Co-Curriculum section to find out more.

  • Our highly regarded Outdoor Education programme is a highlight for many international students. Activities include kayaking, sailing, rock climbing, tramping, high ropes, camps, and first aid training. You will develop confidence, leadership, creativity, and teamwork — all while exploring the stunning New Zealand landscape.

  • Throughout the year we organise day and overnight trips to help you explore New Zealand and make the most of your time here. Accommodation

All international students must live with an approved caregiver. Options include a school-approved homestay family, a parent on a Guardian Visa, or an approved family member or close family friend. Students cannot live independently, regardless of age.

Our Homestay Coordinators carefully vet all accommodation arrangements, and all residential caregivers must undergo Police Vetting. To help us find the best match for you, we ask that you include a letter with your application outlining your interests and what you'd like to experience in New Zealand.

Homestay is a wonderful way to experience true kiwi life. Our host families are welcoming, supportive, and located within easy reach of school, shops, beaches, and local amenities. Living as part of a New Zealand family will help you grow your English, build your confidence, and create memories that last a lifetime.
