What is Leadership?

Friday, 8 July 2016
Leadership may not be easy; it may take a lot of time and effort out of your life but in the end what you achieve is most satisfying. Seeing something you have planned from start to finish and see it plan out just the way you wanted makes you feel like you really have achieved something, something that people can look up to and relay into their everyday lives.
– Sabrina Eagleton, Ingham House Leader
To me leadership is putting the well-being of others before yourself, acting and making decisions to benefit the group rather than yourself.
- Jordan Wright, Bell House Leader
Leadership isn't about this image of being superior over others, giving orders or being the best at something. It is about communicating with people on a different level. Being that person who, instead of walking in front of the people, walks behind. I believe that there is great power behind every person. A leader is a person who can nurture that power and help people grow. I believe that some of the best leaders are people who don't even know it, ones that aren't in the spotlight. Those are the kinds of people leaders of today should be empowering.
"To lead people, walk beside them ... As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honour and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate ... When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves!’" ~ Lao-tsu
- Chloe Usherwood, Irvine House Leader
Leadership isn't defined by the number of badges you have or the amount of positions you're placed in. Leadership isn't defined by where you were born or where you live, Leadership isn't defined by the number of people who like you and compliment you, Leadership isn't even defined by greatness or talent. Simply put if you make a positive change or have a positive influence on one or two people's lives that right there is more impact than any number of badges or talent in the world. You could be the most talented, best looking and most liked person, but if we're not using that to help further the lives of others, why were we born with these gifts in the first place? That is Leadership.
- Charlie Schwalger, Bacot House Leader
Being a leader means standing up for people and being strong in the face of adversity, being prepared to risk your vulnerability, being fair without forgetting what you believe in. Being a leader means some days you won't be perfect, you may not say, be or do the right thing, as a leader you acknowledge this, move forward and learn from your mistakes, as leaders we should always be striving to be the best person we can be.
- Shaman Theron, Bacot House Leader
Leaders are the type of people who eat adversity for breakfast, and come out still hungry for more. They work with people efficiently and effectively and are out to finish what they start. Determination to get the job done. Utter persistence and grit. That is leadership.
- Lachlan Haitana, MacDonald House Leader
A true leader is a sturdy bus - getting the whole team where they need to be, when they need to be there, no matter how bumpy the road is.
- Ben Cummins, Irvine House Leader
Leadership is trying everything possible within your means to make someone grow further and develop their own skill, whether that be simply asking them how they are or creating a new system for them to use. Leadership is about making the best use of opportunities available to lead from behind and impact those around.
- Melissa Palmer, Minerva House Leader
A leader is one who takes a little more than his fair share of the blame and a little less than his fair share of the credit. One who doesn't find fault but finds a remedy and one who sees that it is better to lead from behind in order to put others in front.
- Chris Walden, Minerva House Leader
Leaders are people that integrate with many and influence them to think that impossible converts to "I'm possible". They do not only set examples but learn from many examples that were made previously. Leaders cannot be defined by their skills or how rich they could be, they should be defined from how rich their heart is with others in order to empower them to lead.
- Zierra Litara Misiaita, Ingham House Leader
