A student exchange provides an exciting opportunity to experience a different culture and way of life. Students who complete an exchange grow in confidence and self-awareness, and those who travel to non-English speaking countries improve their language skills.

 

Exchanges can range from 1 term to six months or a year and offer a wide range of countries including:
  • USA
  • United Kingdom
  • Most countries in Europe
  • Scandinavia
  • Japan
  • Brazil and Argentina
 
There are many different exchange programmes and the Howick College careers office has information available for each one. They also host an annual Exchange Expo in March, where all International Youth Exchange groups are represented and are available to talk to.

Please note: Howick College does not arrange private exchanges; all exchanges must go through accredited organisations. 

Exchanges Available

Rotary

Australia – for students in  Year 10; students spend one term in Australia with a host family and then host an Australian student in New Zealand for one term. Full details of the exchange are available at the Careers Office or on-line here.

 
Year Long Exchange – for students aged between 15 – 18yrs in January of the year of departure. Exchanges are available to: France, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Argentina, Canada, Belgium and Sweden.     Howick College students who have participated in these exchanges have been to Canada and Belgium. Details are available from the Careers office or at the Youth Exchange website.

NZIIU offer hosted exchanges to over 12 countries worldwide. They also offer a six week exchange to France which starts shortly after NCEA finishes. Find out more about all their exchange options at their website.
 
AFS has exchanges available in many countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America, ranging from 3 months to a full year. They also offer shorter, intensive exchanges to some countries which range from 3 weeks to 3 months. Find out more at their website.
 
EF - Please note that EF have ceased to exist in New Zealand. All students who are planning to do an international exchange through EF, or are already here on exchange through EF, should see Mr Heays as soon as possible or see the poster in the Student Office.
 
 
Projects Abroad helps volunteers to live and work alongside locals and make a difference to their communities. You might be helping with a project based on health, conservation, teaching or other community programmes. Find out more at their website.
 
STS has a wide range of countries available for student exchanges. Students exchange for a year and can be aged between 14 and 18 years old. Find out more at their website.
 
European Studies Abroad offers the chance to study courses in Design, Hotel Management and Languages in Italy or Spain. Find out more at their website.
 
Camp Counsellors USA provide opportunities for 18 year olds to work in summer camps supervising children during the American summer (June to August). Find out more at their website.
 
Other programmes include:
 Gap Scheme Opportunity for 18 year-olds to work as volunteers in schools, caring organisations, outdoor eduction centres, etc. in the UK . 5 – 12 month placements available. Food, accommodation and reasonable monetary allowance provided.
Four-week GAP experience at the NZ Queenstown Resort College which includes adventure activities and an Outward Bound course.
