ENROLMENT OF 2011 YEAR 9 STUDENTS
Parents/caregivers are advised of the following details relating to enrolment of students for Year 9 2011.
2011 PROSPECTUS – The College prospectus for 2011 will be distributed by mail and through contributing schools in the week commencing Monday 21 June. Copies will also be available from the Howick College reception office.
Information about process and dates follows.
| Important Dates for all Enrolment Applicants |
| Information Evening – Tuesday 20 July, 7.00pm (this will start in the Theatre). |
We cordially invite you to come and learn about the vast opportunities available to students and to see classes in action and displays of work. |
| Personalised Enrolment: |
Unlike other schools we do not operate a postal enrolment system. We value the face to face enrolment meeting. The enrolment meeting – with Deans or Senior Managers - gives parents and students the opportunity to ask and discuss things in person. This is particularly useful for making known both special talents and interests or difficulties relating to learning which can then help us to better meet individual needs. |
| Enrolment evenings: |
Parents and students are asked to attend on either Monday 2 August between 4.00 – 6.00pm or Tuesday 3 August between 5.00 – 7.00pm. Please bring the completed enrolment form and proof of residence in zone and copy of birth certificate (if NZ born) or passport (if overseas born). |
| Out of Zone Enrolments: |
Out of Zone applicants are asked to attend on Thursday 29 July between 4.00 – 6.00pm. Please bring the completed enrolment form and copy of birth certificate (if NZ born) or passport (if overseas born). The closing date for Out of Zone applications is Wednesday 1 September and a ballot will be held on Monday 6 September. |
| International Students: |
Prospective Year 9 International (fee-paying) students should also enrol at the times stated above. |
Note:
The use of the word "Parents" is used to refer to a single
parent, parents, legal guardians or other "responsible adult"
with whom the student may be living and is responsible for all matters
relating to the student's schooling.
- The procedures set out in the Quick Guide below apply to applicants who are entitled to a State-funded education
in New Zealand. Separate procedures apply to foreign
fee-paying students.
- All applicants must complete the official enrolment forms provided
by the school.
- It is anticipated that most out-of-Zone applications will be successful in the ballot.
- All students applying to enrol must attend an enrolment interview
at the school and be accompanied by at least one of his or her
parents.
- Interviews for enrolments for the current term are held by appointment.
Students are usually expected to attend school two school days after the interview.
- Enquiries during school holidays: Phone enquiries will be answered as soon as possible, however this may be at the start of the new term. Email enquiries should be made to

.
- If the applicant is not fluent in English but is fluent in Mandarin,
Cantonese or Korean the interview usually will be attended or
conducted by a staff member who is fluent in the appropriate language.

Quick Guide
- Check that your child will be in-zone and have the appropriate
citizenship or immigration status. (Out-of-zone applications for
Year 9 are welcome but should be registered for the ballot
before the September closing date).
- Visit the school (Sandspit Rd, Howick) or phone Reception (09-5344492)
with any general enquiries or to collect any forms and/or school
prospectus. The Receptionist will arrange an appointment for an
interview with the appropriate person. (Students "pre-enrolling"
for the following year will be provided with information about
Howick College by mail-outs and through their Y8 school.)

bill, a long-term rental agreement with a receipt of up-to-date
payment, an Agreement for Sale and Purchase (with receipt of payment),
or a Statutory Declaration (available from the school Receptionist
or follow the link to Statutory Declaration ).

Pre-Enrolments: Enroling your child for Year 9 next year
NOTE: All enrolments
should follow the instructions in the Quick Guide.
Students living In-Zone and attending a Howick College "contributing
school".
- Contributing in-zone schools include Somerville Intermediate, Howick
Intermediate, Beachlands School, Maraetai School, Star of the
Sea School, and Elim School.
- The school prospectus and other information will be posted late in term 2 to all in-zone students attending the four State contributing schools. Spare copies will be available in all schools, including Private/Integrated schools, early in Term 3.
- Parents are invited to attend an information evening in Term 3 and inteviews will take place in the evening on a range of dates shortly after the information evening.
- Each student must accompany his or her parents to an interview. We strongly urge that all parents ensure that enrolment interviews be held on the official evenings. Late enrolment applicatants may miss out on some of their option choices and it makes it difficult for the school to plan the best education for your child in the coming year.
- Check the Quick Guide (3) to see what to
bring to the interview. Year 9 students should also bring a completed
Option
Sheet, and, if it is appropriate, a Participation
Questionnaire, and/or a Gifted and Talented Nomination Form. (The interviewer will assist with questions
about options - should help be needed - and will be happy to answer
any other questions the student or parents may have.)
- Students who live in-zone and who intend to enrol in Howick
College (or who have not yet had an application to attend another
school accepted) will sit an "Entrance Test" in Term 4. The test, together with information supplied
by the student's current school, helps the College place students
in classes that can best meet the learning needs of the individual
students.
- Howick College will mail out to each new student in mid-December information about the start of the year, including hours of attendance during the first few days of the term, his or her class and House Tutor Group.
- Telephone contact may be made in December with parents or guardians
of students who appear to need extra support in their learning.
Students living In-Zone but attending an Intermediate School outside the Howick College Zone.
Requests for information should be made through the Receptionist.
The process of enrolling such students is the same as for students in contributing schools (see above) except that "Entrance Testing" will be carried out by appointment at Howick College.
