About Learning

It’s all about learning

Welcome to Howick College where “Equipping Individuals for Lifelong Learning” is our Mission Statement.

This recognises that in the 21st century we all require the skills to keep learning. The notion of finishing learning at the end of school is no longer realistic. It also recognises that learning must be tailored to individual needs and abilities – one size does not fit all.

At Howick College academic learning is of the utmost importance. Learning also takes place in a variety of contexts and settings as you will see in the pages of this Prospectus.

You will also read about the framework for our work in upgrading thinking and learning and the complementary Relationships model which has been under development and implementation for the last four years and has “contributed to new ways of thinking about teaching and learning throughout the school. The current school development model introduces a new approach to supporting positive teaching and learning behaviours with the aim of guiding school-wide practice. The new approach focuses on the important interrelationship between learning and behavior.” (ERO, Education Review Report). This also lies at the heart of the revised New Zealand curriculum.

The diagram on the Learning Community page shows the components of these models.
