The College is currently engaged in a range of initiatives all of which are aimed at meeting individual student needs and preparing students for life-long learning.

Curriculum Differentiation and Gifted and/or Talented Students

Howick College has committed to professional development in 2005 which will explore the theory and practice of a differentiated curriculum delivery to all students so that individual student needs are met. Identification of gifted and talented students will be the result of information pooled from teachers, parents, community and students. The process of identification and a differentiated curriculum delivery will have enormous benefits for individual students and the whole school community.

AtoL and AsTTle

The College uses Assessment Tools for Teaching and Learning (AsTTle) as one method to identify student abilities and needs primarily in the areas of literacy and numeracy. Teachers are involved in the Assessment to Learn (AtoL) professional development programme to develop strategies in using assessment to improve learning.

Rich Task

In one aspect of curriculum differentiation, students in two Year 9 classes will be completing a Rich Task project in Term 3. The project aims to encourage students to integrate their knowledge and skills so that they will begin to see the "big picture" of learning.

Schooling Strategy, Literacy Stocktake

School managers are involved in a wide-ranging review of all aspects of the curriculum to enable the College to plan for curriculum delivery that meets the needs of 21st Century students. This also includes the literacy skills that are taught across the curriculum

Pathways to Employment

This is an initiative driven by Howick College aimed at aligning our teaching programmes for students (supply side) with labour requirements of employers (demand side), particularly where there are skills shortages.

Howick College has hosted several Expos, which enable students in specific subject areas from schools around Auckland to be exposed to employment opportunities related to their studies.

Howick College, in partnership with other Principals in Auckland, central Government, Local Government, Enterprise agencies and Employers is working to develop a sustainable and strategic approach to these Expos.
