Sport at Howick College is an integral part of a student's development, and aims to reinforce the school's supportive learning environment, and our values of courtesy, commitment, courage and curiosity.

Our sport programme caters for all abilities, whether the students are playing sport socially with their friends, or as a member of one of our nationally successful sports teams such as Sevens, Rowing or Underwater Hockey.

Sport has a positive impact on young people's physical health and international evidence suggests that increased participation in sport and physical activity can lead to improved academic and social outcomes, benefiting students, schools and communities. This is why Howick College is a founding school in the implementation of the Sport in Education project (SIE).

A Word From Our Premier Teams...

Matt Turner (1st XV - Vice Captain)
Last Saturday Howick College 1st XV came up against Alfriston College. The game went down to the wire with Alfriston snatching the game in the dying minutes, final score 24-22 to Alfriston. A positive to take out of the game was our attacking set piece, we managed to exploit the defense and score 3 tries from a set piece. Going forward, we have room to improve our ability to stay in the grind as we lost our key fundamentals such as line speed, and chop tackles in the second half once they started scoring points. This weekend on Saturday, we come up against Kelston at Home at 11:00 am, your support doesn't go unnoticed and we would love to see you there!
Jenna Hainsworth (1st XI Girls Hockey - Captain)
On the 13th June the Howick College 1st XI Girls played against Marist College 1st XI Hockey girls at Avondale College. It was a good game with hard defensive play and sharp attacking play where the girls came away with a 8-0 win. It was a great team effort where we supported each other resulting in the setting up and scoring multiple goals.
Cole Maccallum  (Hockey 1st XI Boys  - Vice Captain)
On Wednesday, 12 June, Howick College Xl hockey boys played against Henderson XI hockey boys. Henderson started off strong scoring the first goal. The boys kept their heads up and shortly afterwards we scored a goal which started a series of  5 more goals. At half time it was 6-2. Henderson put up a good fight with the end result being 7-2. Our year 9 boys put on a good show also, scoring 6 of the 7 goals. Overall this was by far one of the better games we have played this year with all the boys having a great game.

Su-Elyse Ulugia (Premier Netball Team - Vice-Captain)

Our most recent game was against Baradene College and I think it’d be fair to say that it was a similar match to when we played Westlake meaning, we had a slow and low intensity start that progressed into some real star work with great discipline and composure that finally landed us with the win. We got off to a rocky start and struggled to find any real pace or teamwork but, after making some changes during the couse of the game, the plays started to lift and the team was more decisive with ball release, executed proper ball placement and showed some great defence. Every week we are training our hardest to improve and better ourselves. If you would like to witness our hard work and dedication shine on court, then come on down to the Auckland Netball Courts every Saturday morning to support your favourite HC Team! Don’t forget to wear your red and black HC gear.
